Healthy Start Scheme

If you’re pregnant or have a child under four, the Healthy Start scheme can help you buy foods like milk, vegetables, fruit and pulses.

To qualify for the food vouchers you will usually need to receive one of the following benefits:

• Child Tax Credit (but only if your family’s annual income is £16,190 or less)
• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
• Income Support
• Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
• Pension Credit
• Universal Credit (only if your family earns £408 or less per month from employment)

But anyone under 18 who is pregnant is entitled to the vouchers, even if they don’t get any of these benefits.

You’ll get £4.25 each week if you’re pregnant or have a child between one and four and if you’ve got a child under one you’ll receive £8.50 each week.

Already getting Healthy Start Vouchers? Changes are coming!

From 31 March, paper vouchers will no longer be issued so you should apply for the new digital service as soon as possible by visiting You will fill in an online application form and then receive a new pre-paid card in the post. Once you’ve activated your PIN, you can use the card in most retail stores that sell eligible items and accept Mastercard payments.
