Useful Vision organise activities, days out, skills workshops for the families of blind and vision impaired children across the North East. The activities are designed to stimulate and engage children with little or no vision but at the same time are enjoyable for the whole family. They can include anything from kayaking to cookery classes. Skills workshops are also specifically designed for vision impaired children (cookery, team building exercises, make up tips for older girls) – not only to increase the level of skills but also to gain confidence in all aspects of daily living and social life.
Family support and information service provides advice relevant for families affected by a child’s or young person’s sight loss.

Useful Vision runs regular activities and days out for the families of vision impaired children at a variety of venues across the North East (siblings and parents/carers are welcome to attend all the activities except the skills classes which are generally for vi children only). We use family attractions, farms, leisure centres, museums, cinemas, RDA (riding for the disabled) centres, swimming pools, where we will organise exclusive activities and experiences for the families attending.
Activites range from multi-sport taster sessions, to family swims, drama and singing sessions, family bowling, kayaking, craft sessions, story telling – we’re always looking for new ideas and venues!
No referral necessary. Parents/carers can contact us direct. Registration is straightforward and free. Invitations are sent out monthly to the various organised activities and parents/carers select those they feel their children would enjoy.
All activities are free to the vi child and family. (Occaisionally there is a small charge for sighted siblings accessing specialist activities). Activities are organised weekends and during school holidays. Some of the skills classes are after school.
Families of vi children aged 0-19 can access the Useful Vision services. Many of the children have addition special needs. Useful Vision welcomes sight impaired children whatever their level of ability.
Families complete a registration form which asks of details of disability. As long as there is a significant sight impairment families can access our services.
