Toxic Shock Syndrome Information Service

The Toxic Shock Syndrome Information Service (TSSIS) provides both members of the public and medical professionals with factual and balanced information on Toxic Shock Syndrome - TSS.

TSS is an illness that will make you feel severely ill very quickly.  It is non-contagious, so other people can't get it off you.  TSS can affect anyone.

People who use tampons can get TSS.  If you are using a tampon and experience any of these symptoms:-

  • A sudden high fever (temperature)
  • Vomiting
  • A sunburn-like rash
  • Diarrhoea
  • Fainting or feeling faint
  • Muscle aches
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion

Remove the tampon immediately, contact your doctor immediately and tell them that you have been using tampons.  If necessary, your doctor will be able to begin treatment early.

TSS can also be caused by localised infections for example, following burns, boils, insect bites or following surgery.
